Port Douglas Looks a Great Each-Way Bet in the Irish Derby

Port Douglas

Ryan More all-out to hold off Port Douglas a short-head with Seamie Heffernan riding hands and heels having nearly beaten his much-hyped stable star in the Chester Vase.

5.20 Curragh: Port Douglas will be looking to bounce back from a poor placing in the Epsom Derby where he finished distant 14 of 16 after setting a suicidal pace in the race. The pace eventually collapsed in the derby with all the horses racing near the pace fading and the held up horses fighting out the finish.

Prior to the derby he was beaten a short head by the Derby Favourite and second place finisher US Army Ranger in the 2016 Chester Vase, trying to concede 4lb. He set a sensible pace and allowed his unbeaten stablemate a clear passage on his inside to come through and win. After quickening the pace coming in to the straight he actually ended up putting the Derby favourite under pressure with Ryan Moore having to get aggressive on his mount who received multiple cracks of the whip while Seamie Heffernan appeared to very gentle on his mount under a hands and heels ride after his mount rallied once US Army Ranger came up alongside.

Port Douglas is a tough front-runner who should get his own way upfront in this smaller field and while Harzand does look a solid favourite Port Douglas does look a great each-way bet in race that shapes as a great each-way market against the bookmakers. The odds-on Harzand and a 9 runner field make Port Douglas a great each-way bet at 20/1 at ¼ the odds which effectively pays 5/1 for a place. The place on Betfair is just 3/1; you could even lay off your win stake in-running as he also looks a good back-to-lay having traded below at least half his BSP in his last 4 races.
