Andre Fabre Steps Up Doha Dream in the Prix Niel

Doha Dream

Andre Fabre’s Doha Dream comes in to the Prix Niel relatively unknown having only run in listed events at the smaller French tracks; the likes of Vichy, Nantes and Lyon.

This will be a massive step up against Makahiki, the dual Japanese classic winner. All the attention has been on the Japanese horse and while is form puts him miles in front of all the others in the race, it will be his first race since May and with his target being the Arc he may not be 100%. After Christophe Lemaire partnered Makahiki in a widely publicised public gallop, his initial impression was not that positive and described his work as “not very impressive”, until responding back that he was happy with the work.

Midterm also comes in the race having not run since flopping in the Dante in May, while Darabad and Carzoff look to be way behind the market leaders.

Doha Dream doesn’t have an entry in the Arc itself but a good run could see him enter the picture for Al Shaqab, especially as they don’t have any leading contenders for the race and supplementary fees are not going to be an issue. In recent years Al Shaqab have bought leading contenders from other owners; purchasing Treve who went on to win two Arcs and Ectot who won the Prix Niel in great style, before flopping in the Arc.

His enigmatic trainer, Andre Fabre gave little away to the media who pressed him about his runner “He could either run in this or stay in his box, but I would prefer to see him run in this”. Fabre has avoided any major tests for his horse which could be partly to do with the virus that has been affecting many parts of Northern France or by design. This is a similar path he had taken with Cherry Mix who was just denied in the Arc by Bago.

Doha Dream has run 5 times this year, winning 4 of those races. He has looked to struggle for pace in his races, hitting a flat spot when the pace has quickened so a dawdle and a sprint is not going to suit him but he could well be taking this field along from the front. He does look to race lazily and has his quirks which does includes jumping paths.

He is currently available at 7/1 with the UK bookies but he could well be bigger on the exchanges with Makahiki and Midterm likely to be fancied by UK punters. It also worth keeping an eye on the PMU as there could be lots of money coming for the Japanese horse from patriotic punters; Makihiki is currently hovering around 1.10 on the PMU with Doha Dream around 5.0 and Midterm 20+.

The race-fit Doha Dream is a speculative bet at a decent price that could take advantage of the market leaders if they are not fully wound up for today’s race. He does need to show a lot more than what he has so far, but Andre Fabre, who has won the Prix Niel 11 times wouldn’t be putting an Al Shaqab horse in to an Arc Trial if he didn’t think he would be competitive.
