Pentagon Officials using Expense Accounts for Escorts and Gambling
A recent report investigating expense accounts at the Pentagon discovered over $1 million had illegally charged to government expenses to pay for “adult entertainment”.
The report uncovered 900 transactions described as “Adult entertainment transactions” that were used to pay for escorts, totalling $96,576. There were also 4,437 casino transactions recorded that totalled $952,258.
DoD management did not take appropriate action when notified that cardholders potentially misused their travel card at casinos and adult entertainment establishments, Specifically, DoD management and travel card officials did not perform adequate reviews for the cardholders reviewed and did not take action to eliminate additional misuse.
The report found that very little action was taken over the misuse of the expense accounts when discovered. A Naval officer who spent $1,417 on “Adult entertainment” was “retrained”, having agreed to sign a “statement of understanding” and keep his expense spending to activities that are rated PG-13. No further action was taken.
The report also noted that when the misuse was detected, officials did not know what the appropriate course of action was to take with many receiving advisory letters of caution with no further action.
