In-running Lays: Back-to-lay Smad Place, Sumos Novios and Vickys Charm

Smad Place

Above: Smad Place should return to front running at Cheltenham.

1.50 Cheltenham: While Smad Place doesn’t have a great in-running profile he could be a great back-to-lay if reverting back to his flamboyant front running tactics dropping back to a grade 2 chase. He won the Hennessy from the front in spectacular fashion after taking up the running early in the race and finished second in this race last year. He looked likely to win last year until a series of mistakes compromised his chances late in the race.

He was held up in the King George where he ran a little flat; they choose to ride him this way because of the competitive nature of the race that looked to be loaded with pace. He comes in to this race carrying just 11-6, with the odds-on favourite Djakadam, Many Clouds and Sam Winner all on 11-12. At the weights, in this grade 2 on the ratings Smad Place just comes out the best. Sam Winner looks like the main contender to take him on for the lead but has a tough task with a penalty; Smad Place currently trades around 9.40 for a back-to-lay.

1.55 Fairyhouse: Sumos Novios has traded below at least half his BSP in-running in all his 6 races to date. He takes on some good horses but receives weight from all and is in great form, while there are many question marks over the opposition. He is a front runner but may have Grand National contender Seabass up with him along with Lord Scoundrel who has front run in the past; Sumos Novios currently trades around 4.50 for a back-to-lay.

2.55 Uttoxeter: Vickys Charm comes in to the small 6 runner handicap hurdle in great form. She will probably try to lead and only the favourite, Clan Legend looks the only other contender to challenge her for the lead. She has a great record here at Uttoxeter and looks likely to go close again; she currently trades around 4.40 for a back-to-lay.
