The Druids Nephew started favourite for last year’s race and looked to be going very well when leading, until crumpling on landing at Valentines Brook. He traded down to 3.05 from a BSP of 11.28 and while there was still quite a way to go he did look very likely to be involved in the finish.
He should start a bigger price this year; he is currently 16/1 with bookies. Though he is 9lb’s higher this year he could still run a good race on a track he performed well on until falling.
Rocky Creek was sent off at 8/1 in last year’s Grand National having finished fifth the year before carrying 11-5, but finished 17th after racing prominently for much of the way. He started last year’s race at 12.50 on Betfair and barely moved in price, down to just 10.0 in-running.
This year he will start as an outsider; he is currently 66/1 with bookies following a fairly quiet season, but races off a lower mark, on just 10-13 this year. He could start at a three figure price on Betfair, which gives a lot of opportunity for price movement for a horse that likes to race prominently in the Grand National.
Shutthefrontdoor was AP McCoy’s last ride in the race, but that didn’t see him attract much support on Betfair where he started at 28.10 while he was sent off at just 6/1 with the bookmakers. He ran very well in the race, travelling well in behind the leaders for a long way before tiring late on; he traded down to 5.0 in-running.
Saint Are finished second in last year’s Grand National, only beaten 1 and ¾ lengths by Many Clouds, who he is a little better off at the weights with, this time around. He started at 34.0 on Betfair and traded all the way down to 3.10 in-running after travelling well in the latter stages. He seemed to hit a flat spot before staying on to close on the winner. He’s going to be a shorter price this year, currently 16/1 with the bookies but has been given a chance by the handicapper for a horse that seems much better at Aintree.
Soll ran prominently for a long time in last year’s race and traded all the way down to 3.50 from a BSP of 13.50. The handicapper has really punished him this year and races off a 13lb higher mark than when he finished ninth last year. Though he looks to have a lot on at the weights but he should run his usual race up with the leaders for a long way.
With a compressed handicap to attract higher rated horses and over a slightly shorter distance (since 2013 the race has been run over 2 furlongs less) the Grand National is starting to see high class and former highly rated horses being given quite generous racing weights.
Just over two years ago Sir Des Champs was one of the highest rated horses in training with a rating of 173. In 2013 he won the Hennessy Gold Cup, finished 2nd in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and won the Punchestown Gold Cup but finds himself carrying just 10-13 in this year’s Grand National. Having been off the track for nearly 2 years he returned with a listed win at Thurles before struggling in two subsequent races in grade 1 company. He is currently priced up at 40/1 with the bookies.
The Holywell (16/1) who ran a great race at Cheltenham, Boston Bob (25/1) and On His Own (50/1) also been treated leniently by the handicapper.
