2016 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud Preview

Criterium International

Boos

Above: Boos, trained by Philip Sogorb takes on the colts in the group 1 Criterium International.

Aiden O’Briens Promise To Be True is sure to be a strong favourite after finishing second in the Prix Marcel Boussac at this year’s Arc meeting earlier this month. British and Irish runners dominated the meeting on the quick ground but today’s race will be run on very different ground. Promise To Be True is a deserving favourite and you may get a bigger price on the PMU if you fancy her. Her only poor run came in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh over 7 furlongs which was run over yielding ground. While her achievements put her way above today’s opposition the drop back in distance may not be in her favour along with the soft ground.

The Godolphin runners Bay Of Poets and Thunder Snow are coupled on the PMU and with Christophe Soumillon on the fancied Thunder Snow you would be better off backing him with the UK bookies at 4/1 if you fancy him.

The Philip Sogorb trained filly Boos is one of the most exposed in the field, she is available at 20/1 with Betfair and will most likely be even bigger on the exchanges. Her overall form leaves her quite a bit to find with the favourite, but she does relish the soft ground.

She beat Spainburg on soft ground earlier in her career, who later went on to beat Fair Eva in the group 2 Rockfell Stakes at Newmarket last month. She met that same opponent in August on good ground and finished 3 lengths behind her in fourth; finding the pace too much for her on the quicker ground.

The return to soft ground should really suit and at 20/1 she looks a great each-way bet, she currently hovers around the 6/1 mark on the PMU early morning.

Mate Story is in great form having won a group 3 last time out and before that was just collared by Konstrat here at Saint-Cloud. Konstrat then went on to finish fourth to National Defense in the Jean-Luc Lagadere. He is a tough front-runner who could get his own way up-front, he’s a best priced 9/1 with the UK bookmakers, but is sure to be shorter on the PMU being a fancied French trained runner.

Criterium De Saint-Cloud

Waldgeist

Above: Waldgeist, beaten favourite in the Prix De Conde should relish the stamina test today.

Capri is the stand-out horse in this race; he has some impressive form with cut in the ground and is a worthy favourite.

If you don’t fancy taking a short price about Capri then Andre Fabre’s Waldgeist (12/1) and Mikel Delzangle’s Prinz Hlodowig (22/1) could be worth chancing at decent prices with the UK bookies. Both horses finished a close-up second and third to Frankus at Chantilly in the group 3 Prix De Conde on good ground. Both horses should appreciate the step-up to 10 furlongs and the soft ground to turn the tables on Frankus.
